The AutoScan-DS-EX Pro(C) at $5,299 handles the bulk of lab scanning work. Models, impressions, dies, wax-ups. For a lab that processes a mix of crown-and-bridge, denture, and ortho cases, this is the workhorse.

The AutoScan-DS-EX Pro(H) at $7,499 has higher precision optics. The $2,200 premium buys tighter tolerances, which matter for implant cases, multi-unit bridge frameworks, and any situation where fit accuracy at the micron level is the difference between a seat and a remake.

What desktop scanners scan

Unlike intraoral scanners that capture live anatomy, desktop scanners work with physical objects on a rotating platform:

• Stone models and individual dies
• Physical impressions (for converting to digital files)
• Wax-ups and wax patterns
• Articulated models (with facebow data)
• Implant analogs and scan bodies on models
• Finished restorations (for verification scanning)

The output is a high-resolution 3D mesh (STL, PLY, or OBJ) that goes directly into CAD software for design.

Why labs still need desktop scanners

Intraoral scanners are growing fast, but they haven't replaced physical impressions. Here's why desktop scanners remain necessary:

Not every referring dentist has an intraoral scanner. Many practices still send PVS or alginate impressions. Your lab needs to digitize those impressions to design in CAD software.

Some workflows require physical models. Full-arch denture cases, complex occlusal rehabs, and some implant protocols still involve pouring stone models and scanning them for the digital design phase.

Verification scanning. After fabricating a restoration, scanning the finished piece and comparing it to the digital design catches fit issues before the restoration ships. This is a quality control step that saves remakes.

Pro(C) or Pro(H): how to decide

If your lab does mostly crown-and-bridge, dentures, and orthodontic models, the Pro(C) at $5,299 has the accuracy you need. The price difference buys you $2,200 worth of other supplies or software.

If your lab handles implant cases regularly, does multi-unit bridge frameworks, or serves a referral base that demands the tightest possible fit, the Pro(H) at $7,499 is the safer choice. The higher precision reduces the risk of fit issues on complex cases.
