The central difference: access versus ownership

A Flex License is subscription-based. It stays active while the subscription is maintained, regular upgrades are included, and exocad allows modules to be activated or deactivated within the Flex model. A Perpetual License is permanent and valid indefinitely; an optional upgrade contract provides ongoing releases and related services.

Where subscription is usually stronger

Subscription is easier to justify when cash preservation and adaptability are operational priorities. A new lab may prefer to keep capital available for scanners, workstations, printers, mills, materials, and payroll. A growing lab may want to add a seat before it knows whether the extra production is permanent. Ultimate is especially useful when the team wants broad capability now without assembling modules one at a time.

The same logic applies to modules. If implant or removable volume is still developing, a subscription path can reduce the pressure to buy the final configuration immediately. That flexibility has value, but it only works when the team reviews usage instead of allowing software plans to accumulate unnoticed.

Where Perpetual is usually stronger

Perpetual licensing is easier to justify for a stable team that knows its production mix and expects to use the same seat for years. Ownership can be attractive when the lab values a permanent software asset and is comfortable managing an upgrade contract separately.

The risk is not the license itself. The risk is treating “permanent” as “never needs attention.” exocad notes that older software may eventually meet hardware or operating-system compatibility limits. A Perpetual buyer still needs a lifecycle plan for supported computers, releases, libraries, and security.

AI services change the comparison slightly
