The decision starts with material format

Dry and wet are not two flavors of the same machine. They are two different material workflows. A lab grinding through zirconia discs all day wants something very different from a practice chasing same-day glass ceramic blocks. Add titanium abutments to the mix and you are having a third conversation entirely.

So before you compare a single machine, write down what you actually want to make: zirconia crowns, PMMA provisionals, wax, models, glass ceramics, hybrid ceramics, titanium abutments, whatever specialty work you take on. That list alone knocks most of the catalog out of contention.

Why dry milling matters

Dry milling earns its keep with disc-based zirconia and most lab workflows: it nests efficiently, runs in batches, and skips the coolant for materials that do not need it. vhf's E5 is a good example, positioned around dry processing with one install detail worth noting. Official vhf material highlights note that it does not require compressed air.

Details like that tell you what a glamour shot never will. Compressor requirements, dust extraction, CAM workflow, tool inventory, disc handling: those are what you actually live with once the machine is in the room.

Why wet milling matters

Wet milling is the answer when the material needs coolant, or when the whole workflow runs on blocks and abutments. Chairside restorative work usually lands here: a smaller block setup that turns a single case around fast while the patient waits.

The catch is upkeep. Wet systems want fluid, filters, regular cleaning, attention to material compatibility, and a production rhythm of their own. A wet mill can absolutely be the right call, but only if your case mix actually keeps it busy.

A cleaner way to compare machines

Skip the dry-versus-wet debate for a minute. Draw three columns instead: work you do every week, work you might add later, and work you are better off outsourcing. Then pick the machine class that nails the first column and has an honest shot at the second.

This is where it pays to have someone map the machine to the material plan rather than the headline spec, especially when the choice comes down to a compact chairside unit versus a full lab-style production setup.
