The vhf Z4 is the smallest milling machine in vhf camfacture's dental range, and it is built for one job: same-day, single-unit restorations next to the chair. It is a 4-axis wet mill with a high-speed spindle, sized to sit in an operatory rather than a separate lab room.

Where it fits depends almost entirely on two things, the number of axes and the wet processing, so this guide starts there before the rest of the specs.

Why 4 axes, and what it cannot do

A 4-axis mill moves the tool in X, Y and Z and rotates the blank around one axis. That is enough to cut single crowns, inlays, onlays, veneers and copings cleanly, which covers the bulk of chairside same-day work. What four axes cannot do is tilt the spindle to reach steep undercuts or strongly angled screw channels. Those shapes need a fifth axis that swings the blank or the spindle to a new angle.

So the Z4's axis count is the honest boundary of the machine. If the daily caseload is crowns and small anterior work milled from blocks, four axes are the right amount of complexity and cost. If the lab needs angled screw-retained restorations or large multi-unit bridges, that work belongs on a 5-axis machine, and the Z4 is not the tool for it.

Wet milling and the materials it opens up

The Z4 is a wet mill: it floods the cutting area with coolant and runs a water-cooled spindle. Wet processing is what makes glass ceramics safe to mill. Materials like lithium disilicate generate heat and microcracks when cut dry, and the coolant carries that heat away and clears debris from the cut.

That is why the Z4 handles glass ceramics, zirconia, composites, PMMA and wax, and even titanium blocks. For a practice that wants same-day glass-ceramic crowns, wet processing is not optional, it is the reason the machine can do the work at all.

Speed and accuracy

The spindle runs up to 100,000 RPM, the fastest in the dental range, and the machine holds ±0.003 mm repetition accuracy. High spindle speed lets small-diameter burs cut fine detail and smooth margins without dragging the material, which matters most on the thin edges of a single crown.

Tool changes are automatic from a 6-tool magazine, so a typical crown job runs through roughing and finishing burs without an operator swapping tools mid-cut.

Software and integration

The Z4 ships with vhf's dentalcam software with no license fees, and it is designed to take cases from common chairside scanning and design tools so the scan-design-mill path stays connected. For a single-operatory setup, that keeps the workflow on one bench instead of moving files between disconnected programs.

Where the Z4 fits the vhf lineup

The Z4 is the entry point: chairside footprint, four axes, a small 6-tool changer, single-block work. Step up to the 4-axis N4+ for a wet lab mill that holds three blocks and is validated for titanium abutments, or to the 5-axis R5, K5+ or E5 when the work needs angled access or disc-based production volume. The Z4's argument is simplicity and same-day single units, and for that caseload it is well matched.
