Which cleaners discolor T-Markers? The four ingredient groups

T-Markers are made from AL6061 aluminum with a black anodized finish. TruAbutment's R&D team tested which cleaner ingredients attack that finish and published a cleanser guide.

Approved cleaners

  • Ruhof Endozime AW Plus with A.P.A.
  • Metrex EMPOWER® Fragrance Free
  • Dr. Schumacher PLURAZYME™ EXTRA

All three are neutral enzymatic cleaners based on subtilisin, with no oxidizing agents, strong alkalis or chelating agents.

The four groups to avoid

Group What it does Examples
Oxidizing agents Bleach the dye in the anodized layer Hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate
Strong alkalis (above pH 9) Dissolve the anodic oxide layer Potassium hydroxide, trisodium phosphate, sodium carbonate, monoethanolamine
Chelating agents Strip metal ions from the sealing layer EDTA, NTA, citric acid, gluconic acid, lactic acid
Auxiliary risk factors Weaken the sealing layer and speed up the others Glycol ethers, MEK, glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde

Read the label, not the brand

TruAbutment's rule is simple: a cleaner is a concern once its ingredient list includes any of the four groups. A cleaner that is missing from the guide has not been reviewed, so check its ingredients first.
