Medit's official export-dialog example. Labels and available options can vary with the installed version.

We recommend asking the technician who will open the case for their preferred delivery method. Include the CAD program and version in that discussion. A request for "the scan files" leaves several practical decisions unresolved.

Choose the export around the receiving workflow

Medit Link's Get Result Files guide describes an export dialog with a CAD selection and mesh-format choices. It supports exporting margin information as color in formats such as OBJ and PLY; that color-based margin information does not transfer in STL. For exocad, the guide also describes a separate margin.xyz file.

Ask the lab which format it wants and whether it expects margin information as part of the handoff. Have the technician explain which files they need to receive together. Write down the agreed answer in your training checklist so different operators do not make a fresh format choice for each case.

Before export

Confirm the CAD workflow and the requested files.

After delivery

Ask the lab to open the package and confirm its contents.

Check the complete package with a training case

Use a demonstration case without patient identifiers. Export the agreed files to a clearly named folder, then review the contents before sharing through the practice's approved channel. Ask the receiving technician to open the package in the intended CAD workflow.

Have the lab confirm that the required arches and supporting information are present and usable for that workflow. Ask whether the prescription and any reference attachments arrived through the same channel or need a separate step. Record the answer with the export instructions.

Decide whether individual meshes are needed

Medit's September 30 Link 3.5.0 release adds an option to export individual meshes together with combined meshes. Confirm whether the lab wants that option enabled for the intended case before making it part of your routine.

More files can create ambiguity if the recipient does not know which set to use. Ask the technician to identify the preferred set during the test. Keep the resulting instructions specific enough that a second operator can repeat the export without guessing.

Use clear revisions when a case changes

Agree with the lab how to distinguish an updated delivery from the original. If a case is rescanned or a prescription changes, identify the replacement package through the approved communication process and ask the lab to confirm which version it will use.

During onboarding, have a second team member perform the handoff from your written checklist. If they need an explanation that is missing from the checklist, add it before routine use. This is a practical test of the instructions, rather than a claim that the scanner guarantees compatibility with every downstream workflow.
