Medit iE setup: prepare your first scan and lab handoff

A useful first Medit iE session ends with a case your laboratory can receive and review. Prepare the computer, team roles and lab connection before that session so the demonstration covers the whole handoff.

Medit describes iE around case creation, scanning and laboratory transfer in Medit Link. The checklist below helps organize those steps. It is an implementation plan, not a substitute for the manufacturer's instructions for use, clinical judgment or the laboratory's case requirements.

Agree on the first case with the laboratory

Contact the lab you intend to use and ask what it needs for the chosen restoration type. Confirm the required scan datasets, prescription details, shade information, supporting photographs and how the lab will request a clarification. The required information depends on the case; use the lab's current requirements.

Choose a training case that represents routine work in your practice, within the scanner's supported use and your clinical training. Decide who will prepare the case record, operate the scanner, review the information and confirm the transfer. A clear handoff between people is as useful as a clear sequence in the software.

Check the actual computer and connection

The iE brochure specifies a detachable 2 m cable and USB 3.1 Gen 1 with Power Delivery. It lists Medit Link for Windows and Mac. Have your dealer check the exact computer, operating system and port against current system requirements. Avoid an unverified adapter or dock being introduced for the first time during a patient appointment.

Set up the proposed workstation in the room where it will be used. Check screen visibility, cable reach and a suitable place for the handpiece when it is not in use. The operator should be able to see the software without repeatedly turning away from the working area.

Set up the account before the appointment

Medit's scanner-connection guide describes automatic registration when the scanner is connected with internet access. Confirm the intended Medit Link group and administrative owner before that connection. Have the responsible team member check that the scanner appears under the intended account.

Keep access under the practice's own account policy and give each staff member the permissions needed for their role. Verify the receiving laboratory connection and the actual transfer route. Having an account and having a working connection to the intended laboratory are separate checks.

Prepare the tips and follow the current instructions

The manufacturer lists large and medium tips for iE. Confirm the correct parts, inspect them and follow the current cleaning and sterilization instructions before use. The brochure's maximum cycle count should be incorporated into a documented reuse process, not treated as a reason to skip inspection.

Ask the trainer to demonstrate the supported scan sequence and the available case-review tools on the exact software version. Optional Realtime Intelligence can be discussed separately; your practice should know which functions are licensed on its scanner before relying on them in a planned workflow.

Review the case as a handoff package

Before sending, the responsible clinician should review the scan and the accompanying case information. Check that the intended datasets are attached, the prescription matches the requested work and the receiving laboratory is correct. Use the lab's requirements and the software's current instructions when deciding whether information is complete.

During initial training, include a deliberate lab-side check. Ask the lab to confirm that it can open the transferred case and identify anything missing. File receipt does not, by itself, mean the case has been clinically or technically accepted for manufacture.

Use the first week to improve the handoff

Record simple operational questions: how long setup took, where help was needed and whether the lab requested missing information. Review those observations with the trainer and laboratory before extending the workflow to more demanding cases. They help refine your local process without assuming a new scanner automatically reduces remakes or chair time.
