exocad AI Credits explained: pricing, features, and where to buy
Share
exocad added AI to DentalCAD. Not as a buzzword, but as three specific tools that automate parts of the design workflow. They run on a credit system. If you use exocad, you'll encounter this sooner or later, so here's how it actually works.
The three AI features
| Feature | Credits per use | What it does |
| AI Crown Design | 1 | AI designs a single crown automatically. In DentalCAD 3.3 Chemnitz, it can handle up to 3 posterior crowns or bridge pontics in one pass. |
| TruSmile Photo | 2 | Takes a patient photo and your Smile Creator design, then generates a realistic preview of how the final restoration will look on the patient's face. |
| TruSmile Video | 10 | Same concept as TruSmile Photo, but with video. Takes patient video, scan data, and your design, then generates a dynamic smile simulation. |
AI Crown Design is the workhorse. One credit, one crown. For a lab doing 20 crowns a day, that's 20 credits. The AI doesn't replace the technician. It generates a first-pass design that the technician reviews and adjusts. The time savings come from skipping the initial sculpting step.
TruSmile Photo and Video are patient communication tools. They help the dentist show the patient what the result will look like before committing. At 2 and 10 credits respectively, they're used selectively, not on every case.
How credits work
There are two types of credits, and they work differently.
License credits (free monthly)
If you have an exocad Flex license, you get 30 credits per month, included. Perpetual license holders get 10 per month, but only if they have an active upgrade contract. These credits reset monthly. They don't roll over.
30 credits per month covers about 30 AI Crown designs, or 15 TruSmile Photos, or 3 TruSmile Videos. For a small practice doing occasional AI-assisted designs, the free allocation might be enough.
Account credits (purchased)
When you need more than the monthly free allocation, you buy account credits. These are shared across all licenses on the same my.exocad account. exocad sells them directly through their webshop at EUR 1 per 10 credits.
Dentcore sells them at competitive USD pricing with faster delivery.

Frequently asked questions
Do purchased credits expire?
exocad's public documentation doesn't state an expiration date for purchased account credits. However, there's also no written "never expires" guarantee. We're waiting for written confirmation from exocad before making any promises on this.
Can I share credits across multiple licenses?
Yes. Account credits are tied to your my.exocad account, not to individual licenses. If you have three seats, all three draw from the same credit pool.
Does AI Crown Design work on anterior teeth?
As of DentalCAD 3.3 Chemnitz, AI Crown Design supports posterior teeth, up to 3 units in one pass. Anterior support may come in future updates.
What if the AI design isn't good enough?
The credit is consumed when the AI processes the design. You review the result and adjust manually in DentalCAD. The AI gives you a starting point, not a final product.
Can I use these features on DentalCAD 3.1 or earlier?
No. You need at minimum DentalCAD 3.2 Elefsina Feature Release (Build 9036+).
What about the Flex monthly subscription?
exocad is expected to launch a monthly Flex subscription option around April 2026, which would lower the upfront cost of getting into the exocad system. Current Flex annual pricing is around $3,688/year.
Dentcore is an authorized exocad dealer.
